Why We Crave Autumn
Now that we’ve finally hit the “-ber“ months, some of us are truly celebrating 🍂 But have you ever wondered why you crave that cozy autumn feeling so deeply? It’s not just the pretty leaves, the cool air, or the pumpkin spice. That pull you feel toward soft sweaters, warm drinks, and quiet rainy mornings is your nervous system asking for safety and rest.
And it turns out there is actually a name for this biological process: neuroception.

Coined by neuroscientist Dr. Stephen Porges, neuroception you brain’s subconscious way of scanning the environment to detect whether you’re safe, or under threat. This process happens automatically, without you even realizing it - and it heavily influences your mood, energy, and sense of calm.
In autumn, many of those cues for safety come naturally:
Dimmer light reduces overstimulation and soothes our visual system, especially for sensitive neurodivergent individuals.
Rainy days slow us down. The soft, repetitive sounds of rain can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for calming the body.
Cooler temperatures encourage us to pull out the blankets, fuzzy socks, warm sweaters and mugs of tea, which all reinforces calm and emotional safety.
Predictable rituals like lighting candles or drinking something warm can create comforting structure and rhythm in our day.
All of this adds up to an environment that gently tells you: You’re safe now, you can rest.

For highly sensitive people this feeling can be rare in a world that’s always loud, bright and fast. That’s why autumn feels like a sigh of relief - it’s the body returning to a pace that feels manageable, even nurturing. So if you find yourself yearning for cozy sweaters, flickering candles, and quiet evenings as summer fades, know this: your craving for cozy is valid and rooted in how your brain protects and restores you. It’s not about laziness or moodiness. It’s about needing a pause - a season that finally matches your inner rhythm.
So let yourself enjoy it. Light the candle, sip the tea and wrap yourself in blankets. These are more than just seasonal indulgences - they are signals for safety and restoration. And your brain knows exactly what to do with them.
Thank you for reading and I hope I see you next time. 🍂
Keep your heart cozy - no matter the season.
